Army Gallerries

After action report

Last night our group played another game on Barsoom. I've been working on some small scale rules for use when with small groups of figures similar to Legends of the Old West but down on a D10 to give a broader range of possibilities. The game went very quickly and we all had a good time. Sitting around discussing changes in the rules we wanted to make a couple younger gentlemen showed up and expressed an interest so we set it up and ran it all over again.

Prologue to the Battle

A Heliumite squadron of flyers is perfoming a scouting mission over a remote section of Barsoomian desert. They spot a small force of what appear to be Green Warriors of the Warhoon tribe moving across the desert floor towards a maze of rock formations in the distance. As they come closer to the Warhoon group they are spotted and the green men bring their radium rifles to bear on the flyers of the scouting party. One of the flyers takes a hit serious enough to cause it to lose bouyancy and it is forced to land in the midst of the rock formations ahead.

Once on the ground the Heliumites spot signs on the ground that the area sees a lot of travel from the green men and bears all the hallmarks of a location a Warhoon hatchery might be hidden. The party's commander lands all his available men to protect the downed flyer while it makes repairs as well as attempt to find the hatchery and destroy it before the green men arrive. He sends the remaining boats back to the closest outpost to fetch reinforcements. The Warhoon warriors will put up a fierce fight to protect their young.

The battle

The red martians occupying the rock formation formed up two skirmish lines to meet the two lines of Warhoon. Objective markers scattered around the field indicated places where the hatchery might be found. While several individual Heliumites headed towards the nearest marker the bulk of the force took the fight to the Warhoon.

The green warriors approached from two sides, firing rapidly as they came. On the right the losses to the red men were heavy while on the left it was the Warhoon who were wiped out. The battle came to grand end as the leaders of the two groups faced off in a fierce sword duel that in the end saw the green chieftain laid down in the dust.

Just as the fight was over, one of the heliumite scouts locates the incubator full of Warhoon young. The eggs are destroyed.

The Heliumite soldiers quickly respond to the green threat by setting up skirmish lines to the right and left to hold off the Warhoon fighters and give the scouts a chance to find the hatchery.
